Bust of Lucius Verus

The 'Bust of Lucius Verus' from The Met x Eichholtz collection is an exquisite reinterpretation of an over-life-sized Marble portrait of the co-emperor Lucius Verus. This handcrafted marble bust rests elegantly on a black metal base, standing at W. 23.5 | D. 30 | H. 58 cm. Each piece is unique, with variations in color and veining that add to its character. HISTORIC PROVENANCE

The Bust of Lucius Verus is a reimagining of a marble portrait of the Roman co-emperor Lucius Verus (A.D. 161–169) in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is said that Verus, who ruled alongside Marcus Aurelius (r. A.D. 161–180), was an idle and feckless leader, but the fragmentary head at the Museum shows him favorably depicted as leonine and majestic. The original bust typifies the Antonine style of carving, with its exquisite drillwork in the hair and dramatic engraved eyes. Our reinterpretation has been faithfully carved in marble, which offers unique variations in color and natural veins, and is placed on a black metal base.
